PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS OF THE PRODUCTIVE RESOURCES IN THE EJIDO EL CAPULIN WITHIN THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY PROTECTED ZONE

Abstract

The objective of this study was the characterization of the social, agricultural, livestock and ethnobotanical components in the ejido El Capulín, in the State of México, to be aware of and to understand the relation-ship between the peasant and its environment as a whole. This is necessary in order to establish a frame of reference of and for, the community. Such reference would permit the planning of production projects to improve or modify their activities and to reduce the pressure over the natural resources. Results indicated that the present methods of agricultural production in the ejido (small scale dirt farming) are based on a single specific crop and subsistence livestock production which do not keep up with the economic needs of the community. This means that the Monarch butterfly protected zone is at risk.
