Abstract

The market behavior in México for bananas (Musa paradisiaca L.) and the effects of middlemen are analized. In order to determine the main factors of the market (supply and demand), an econometric model is proposed, including the effects of wholesale prices on that market. A two -stage least- squares method was used to estimate the model; the reduced restrained form was also estimated in order to know the effects of wholesale price on farm price, on retail price and on the trade balance. Nation-wide data for 1964-1990 were used for the model. It was found that the producerdistributor-wholesaler determines the supply and demand for bananas.
