Abstract

Populations of the wild form of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Argentina can be found in the humid valleys of the Andean Eastern Cordillera from the province of Jujuy to Tucumán; its presence also has been mentioned in Merlo (San Luis Province), in the Sierras Pampeanas (Córdoba and San Luis). This paper compares wild populations and primitive landraces of northwestern Argentina, with wild populations from Merlo, based on morphological data, seed storage proteins and chromatographics patterns of foliar flavonoid extracts. These analyses indicated that materials coming from Merlo have different characteristics in comparison to wild populations and primitive landraces from northwestern Argentina.
